August 5th- Birthday Boy Tylor

The Baltimore group woke up at 6:30 today on the train. After a hearty breakfast and a night of uncomfortable sleep and goofy shenanigans we arrived at 8 in Churchill!!

In Churchill, we met the Canadian Junior rangers and we made friends the second we started talking on the way to the main building in Churchill (The Complex). In the Complex, we played name games to make sure everyone was familiar with everybody. Afterwards, we headed to the pool inside the complex where we swam/showered after 4 long days without showering.

After we got cleaned up, we headed to camp Nanuq to get settled in and eat lunch. Then everyone had A little free-time where we all played an extremely intense game of uno. Afterward, we all got together to talk about the code of conduct and bear safety. We then tried on hip waders (hip length boots). For those of us who couldn’t find the right size, we traveled to a research facility called the Churchill Northern Study Center to get more boots and field gear.

Once we got back, we had a little bit more free time before Julie and the adults taught all of us how to properly sample transects and work in the field. After a long day of work we all sat down to eat supper. We then had even more well deserved free time where we got to play games while the adults where planning a birthday surprise for Tylor’s birthday! We played a fun bonding game while waiting for Julie and them to set up the surprise. We learned the surprise was a birthday scavenger hunt!!! During this scavenger hunt, there was a lot of running and screaming and we are still unclear who actually won. Although in the end, Tylor’s team earned the victory somewhat out of birthday nepotism. Tylor’s team earned well deserved bragging rights and after we all got to eat cake and celebrate Tylor’s birthday. (Woah! Birthday Boy Tylor!-Hayden)

After eating cake we adventured to the coast of Churchill where we saw the Ithaca ( a sunken ship) and we took a lot of pictures on the many rocks we kept tripping on. After a long day, we all headed back to camp Nanuq where we got ready for bed while anticipating a big day tomorrow.
