Polar Bears!
We woke up around 6 am today to be chopper ready. We packed our bags; cleaned our tents; and finished our ISAMR plaque. Got ready for our breakfast hash made by Jill. Cherish finished drawing the ISAMR logo, and everyone signed it too with their numbers and inside jokes. I (Miya) went on the first chopper out, and Cherish was on the 4th chopper. Back at Nester 1, they sat in nature and cleaned up a bit.
The 2nd chopper saw two polar bears: a mom and a cub on the way from Nester 1 to Churchill. Plus, the first and second choppers went with Connie and her family to see some polar bears. It was amazing; there was a mom plus three cubs on the rocks near the water. It was so beautiful and peaceful. One of the cubs was just lying on top of a rock and sleeping. The other three were eating a fish they caught before.
We met up back with the rest of the group and went to Camp Naunuq all together. Everyone unpacked and settled down. It was about 1 p.m. when we made the plan to go to Ithaca (a cargo ship wreck). We walked out to Ithaca because it was low tide. Cherish and I climbed to the bottom of it and found mussels, which we gave to another family who was there.
We came back to Camp Naunuq and Carter, and I (Miya) made dinner: chicken stir fry with rice. Later we were taught by an indigenous elder how to make fried bannock, which was amazing. We had that for dessert, and leftovers were going to be for the field snack tomorrow. After a long but amazing day, we were all out by 11 pm.
