Exploring Scenery in Churchhill

Hey yʻall today was another great day!

Today for breakfast we ate ham, cheese, and egg sandwiches. Afterwards we got ready for the field and headed out to C-1 and C-2.

Today we took samples from big environments, one untouched and one that was burnt back in the 90s. We saw a lot of great lichens and mosses and ate a lot of cloud berries and crowberries.

In the field, we learned to take samples for the biomass in a 100 m² area and how to probe the permafrost and pinning. The first time we practiced these skills, they were a bit laggy, but we got the hang of it the second time around.

Once all samples were taken and all materials regathered, we felt the permafrost before leaving. It was a weird feeling of cold and hard but also slimy. 

Once we got back to camp, we ate goose tacos and had a great time. After dinner, we then took a tour of Churchill landmarks. We saw Miss Piggy, a crashed cargo plane, and the polar bear jail, the place where polar bears that entered town go to be released in the wild, and the grounds of a military base long ago. Unbeaten, all the sightseeing we did, we took a moment of gratitude during the sunset.

Today was a great day and Iʻm so happy we all have the chance to do this. Hopefully weʻll see a polar bear soon, fingers crossed.
