August 8th - Arriving in Nester one
Today we woke up and immediately prepared for the helicopter ride. At around 10:30, we drove to landing and takeoff spot. Each ride was about 20 minutes each way, and there were about 4 people per ride. It took multiple hours for all of the groups to travel to Nester 1.
When each group arrived, they began setting up the tents and unpacking the equipment. As the last group arrived all the tents were set up.
Soon after, we all went out to a site to collect data. It was about a kilometer away. The walk was nice. We saw Caribou antlers and other bones like bear feet and birds skulls. The site went smoothly. We collected everything we needed. When we got back dinner only took a minute to be prepared. We had spaghetti with Snow goose that was hunted by the junior rangers earlier in the year. There was also Caesar salad prepared by camp management.
After dinner, we had a bagel making class led by Julie. Some worked out and some didn't, but it was all fun.
After that day was about over, everyone got ready for bed and we all got in our tents. Just as everyone had begun to fall asleep around 12, Mark spotted a polar bear outside the fence. We all got out of our tents and admired it with the northern lights in the background. We think that it smelled the bagels and came to check it out. It was a super amazing sight especially because of how close we were to it. The fence was still between us and the bear, so we were perfectly safe. Its head was right up to the fence and it was sticking its muzzle through. We all stayed six feet away from the fence to give the bear it’s space. After that we all went back to bed, and the day was over. Peace out my peeps, Jude and Micheal.
